SHOES. We’re not talkin’ 5-inch stilettos. We’re talking about your trusty but stinky favorite workout shoes. There’s so much one could say on this topic, but through some research, here are a few pointers for you ladies to remember.

-Replace your shoes on a regular basis (Yes, you must rid yourself of those favorite tennie shoes that you have worn for every workout, camping trip, lazy Saturday, soccer game, makeout session and trip to the store in the last 10 years.)

- If you???re a runner, a good rule of thumb is to replace your shoes every 200 to 300 miles.
- If you exercise regularly, replace your shoes every 6 to 12 months regardless of how they look. – Most athletic shoes lose 50% of their cushioning after 250 miles of wear.

When shopping for new athletic shoes:
-Look for shoes with cushioning for shock absorption, and make sure they bend at the ball of the foot.
-Shop in the afternoon, when the feet are slightly swollen.
-Wear your sport socks when trying on shoes.
-Make sure the heel is snug and does not slide.
-You should have a thumb’s width between the longest toe and the tip of the toe box.
-Always try on both shoes and lace them as you would for activity.
-Walk (or jog) around the store.
-The shoes you try on should feel good immediately; you should never have to ‘break in’ a pair of athletic shoes.

Although not all of us are runners, www.runnersworld.com has a great Shoes 101 section that includes guides about getting the right fit, figuring out your foot type, and finding the best shoes for your feet. The site also has reviews on about every running shoe imaginable.

Take care of those feet and keep truckin’!
